The role of the Center has evolved in recent years, in response to various changes in the computing and information technology landscape. Computing and information resources are now distributed rather than centralized, and the Center has focused on providing the infrastructure to interconnect users to these computing and information resources. In 1994, combined funding from UNESCO and UP Diliman allowed the Center to undertake the first fiber-optic cabling effort in the University, interconnecting the libraries of the College of Science and the College of Engineering, as well as other nearby buildings. This was followed by other network infrastructure and applications development projects known as DILNET. Though the Intercampus Networking and Communications Project, also spearheaded by the UPCC, the Center serves as the central hub that interconnects the fiber-optic backbones in Diliman as well as other campuses.
